Israel dismisses two officers over deadly strike on aid workers

Measures: The Israeli inquiry found that forces mistakenly thought they were attacking Hamas gunmen when they launched a drone strike on three vehicles of the World Central Kitchen aid group. Seven workers died. The Israeli military also said that a hostage seized during the Hamas Oct. 7 attack likely was killed by an Israeli helicopter gunship. Effects: President Joe Biden told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that U.S. support for Israel will depend on steps to protect aid workers and civilians. And Israel is losing support in public opinion among traditionally friendly nations over the Gaza humanitarian crisis and lack of a clear way out of the Hamas war. Israel approved the reopening of the Erez crossing into northern Gaza to increase the delivery of aid, and Iran renewed its pledge to punish Israel for killing seven officers in a suspected airstrike on its embassy compound in Syria.

Ukraine funds on ice as House Republicans dicker

Infighting: Kyiv is running short of munitions to fight Russia, and money that the Senate approved to help Ukraine may be delayed even longer as hardline Republicans push House Speaker Mike Johnson to add border-security provisions and spending cuts to the package. Latest: Russian forces are inching forward in eastern Ukraine. Fighting raged near the town of Chasiv Yar, a Ukrainian stronghold, but Kyiv denied that Moscow’s troops reached the suburbs. A Russian strike on Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, killed six civilians and injured 10, regional officials said.

US redistricting and the battle for control of the House

Your handy guide: Republicans control the House of Representatives by a narrow margin of 218-213. Legal battles over voting districts in more than half a dozen states could change the maps and affect who controls the House in the 2024 elections. And centrist group No Labels said it couldn’t find a suitable candidate to field a third-party bid for the White House. Setbacks: Judges spurned Donald Trump’s calls to dismiss criminal charges over his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and retention of classified records after the former president left office. Republicans meanwhile are working to get Black support for Trump this year. Bianca Flowers reports from Milwaukee on why this will not prove easy.

Meta overhauls rules on deepfakes, altered media

Labels: The social-media company will apply “Made with AI” tags to videos, images and audio made with artificial intelligence and posted on Facebook, Instagram and Threads ahead of this year’s U.S. elections as deceptive or fake content proliferates. And the estate of George Carlin settled a dispute with two podcasters who used AI to make a comedy routine based on the late legendary comedian. Recycling: Photobucket used to be the world’s top image-hosting site, with more than 70 million users and about half the U.S. online photo market. Those days are long past, but the company might undergo a renaissance if it reaches deals to license its 13 billion photos and videos to be used to train generative AI models.

Before I forget…   Ecuadorean authorities arrested former Vice President Jorge Glas, seizing him from the Mexican embassy and prompting Mexico to suspend bilateral relations. Suriname's ex-president Dési Bouterse was convicted five years ago for his role in the murders of 15 government critics in 1982 and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Authorities can’t find him.   The trial of a former government minister charged with beating his wife to death has gripped public attention in Kazakhstan and presents a test of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s promise to build a fairer society.   Turkey’s nationwide elections nearly tripled the number of female mayors to 11 out of 81 provinces. “The election took place between two sharp lines. One was the mentality that saw women as second class, and the other defended women’s freedom,” said pro-Kurdish DEM party member Gülistan Sönük. “The public chose the latter.”   It’s time to reread Os Lusíadas: Portugal’s government isn’t buying its predecessor’s decision to remove symbols of the nation’s colonial and martial history from the flag. An early seafaring device, shields representing defeated Muslim kings and castles seized from the Moors are returning to the standard.   Support is building among African and Caribbean nations for a tribunal on atrocities dating to the transatlantic trade of enslaved people, and the United States backs a U.N. panel at the heart of the effort.
