Daily Briefing

By Robert MacMillan

Thanks for joining me for today’s Daily Briefing. We’re sifting through the wreckage of the Republicans’ performance in the midterms and looking ahead to see how Democrats could stumble over their divisions as they race for the White House in 2028. Note: this program contains salty language.

Today's Top News   REUTERS/Evan Vucci ‘It absolutely sucks to be here right now’ So says a senior White House official, adding that “morale is as low as it can get.” Republicans want President Trump to clean house, restore discipline and scrap policies that they blame for their losses. “If Trump spends the next two years talking about the same shit, we will get shellacked again in the next election,” one adviser said. The president may have dismissed the cost of living as a problem for many Americans, but voters facing record-high gas and diesel prices on Election Day couldn’t afford that luxury. Latinos in particular cited money woes as one reason they showed up for Democrats in traditional Republican strongholds. Trump spent part of his day after the elections showing off the White House ballroom which remains under construction. “For me, it’s relaxing.” Regarding housecleaning, what’s to become of Pete Hegseth? Trump says the defense secretary is doing “a very good job,” even as sources say he could take one for the team over his push for war with Iran. Trump may have more incentive to end the war now that, as one source wryly noted, “Iran succeeded in regime change in America.” Gulf analysts hope so, but they worry that his loss at home could make him reckless. Democrats remain divided over tacking toward the political center or moving further left. They also face the possibility of a crowded and unpredictable primary before the next presidential election. The midterms gave us many firsts for underrepresented groups in American politics. And yet, experts warn that electoral breakthroughs don’t automatically translate into greater political influence. In other news Bomb threats forced commercial flights to make unplanned landings across Europe. They were the latest in a series of threats targeting airlines on the continent. Monday’s Russian bombing of an aid-distribution point in Ukraine has now killed 42 people, police said, making it one of the deadliest civilian strikes in the war this year. Europe’s far-right politicians are putting some ocean between them and Donald Trump. Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong was sentenced to 10 years in jail on a charge of colluding with foreign entities.

Business & Markets   REUTERS/Mike Segar Elon Musk spent nearly half a billion dollars on the midterms and got little to show for it. We look at what the Democratic sweep of Texas means for his businesses. Cryptocurrency companies dropped $200 million to influence a number of races. They also failed. Chip stocks and the dollar fell while oil steadied around recent lows. Tech stocks rallied on Wednesday as investors bet that Democrat-led curbs on AI data-center construction could cement big companies’ grip on scarce computing power. On that topic, OpenAI knows that many of you despise data centers in your backyards, and its executives want to change your mind.

Mapping the misery of smog   New Delhi. REUTERS/Bhawika Chhabra It’s the time of year when India’s and Pakistan’s farmers burn their crop stubble and the resulting smog settles over New Delhi and other areas, making the very act of breathing dangerous. Our graphics team shows us how this happens. Read more

And Finally... Vatican Media/Handout via REUTERS Knock on heaven’s door long enough and someone just might answer. Bob Dylan blew in to the Vatican for a private audience with Pope Leo. Bobby even wore a tie. Read more
