In the news today: Hundreds are missing in Nepal and Tibet after floods caused by a glacier collapse; a federal judge refuses to order Texas to extradite an ICE officer to Minnesota; and Florida feels the pain as health insurance costs rise. (AP Photo/Niranjan Shrestha) WORLD NEWS Catastrophic floods caused by a glacier collapse kill at least 273, with more than 1,300 missing Rescue teams searched on Thursday for hundreds of missing people along the Nepal-China border following the disaster, including foreigners and pilgrims. What to know: The steep slopes and valleys below the Himalayan mountain range are especially vulnerable to flooding and landslides. Glaciers are melting more rapidly because of human-caused climate change. Nepalese officials said that dozens of bridges were destroyed and nearly 25 miles of roads were damaged, complicating search efforts. The Nepalese army has rescued more than 100 people from flood-affected areas through helicopter operations on Thursday morning, army spokesperson Brig. Gen. Raja Ram Basnet said.

Why this matters: Minnesota authorities have sought his extradition since his arrest in May, but he remains in custody in Brownsville, Texas, a city bordering Mexico. Under Texas law and barring extradition, Castro must be released after 90 days of detention, which is Thursday. Minnesota officials believe Castro could flee the country. U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. wrote in an order that he couldn’t prevent a county sheriff from releasing Christian Castro or order Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to sign his extradition warrant.

Why this matters: Millions of Americans have had to decide whether to keep insurance that often doubled or tripled in cost — or risk going without it. Florida, whose large population of gig workers, entrepreneurs and small business owners relies heavily on the federal health insurance marketplace, has become one of the nation’s most visible epicenters of that impact.  Thousands more who kept coverage are struggling to get by, as prices of necessities like groceries and gasoline remain steep, and health insurers project another year of double-digit premium hikes. While Florida had the most affected residents, its struggles are reflective of broader nationwide concerns over rising healthcare costs and a lack of meaningful policy to address them.

Dolly’s music is also a staple holiday tradition. One reader recalled family Thanksgiving road trips from Oklahoma to Kansas soundtracked by Dolly CDs. Another said “Once Upon a Christmas” has brought joy for decades, even through periods of grief. One reader plans to honor her legacy by donating to Dolly’s Imagination Library charity.
