Welcome back, and thanks for starting the week with us. The big story today is the interim deal to end the Iran war. (AP Photo/Vahid Salemi) WORLD NEWS What to know about a possible deal to end the Iran war The United States and Iran reached an interim deal early Monday and there are plans for a signing of the deal on Friday in Switzerland. However, previous announcements fell through, and what the deal contains remains in dispute. Read more.

What to know: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Friday the terms of dealing with Iran’s nuclear program would be finalized in the 60 days after the initial agreement is signed and that the parties could decide to extend that period.  Three regional officials said the emerging deal was expected to include the phased lifting of sanctions on Iran and the release of frozen Iranian assets. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the negotiations. A senior U.S. administration official, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity under ground rules set by the White House, said earlier that the emerging agreement includes provisions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Why this matters: It was all a very long way from when Trump’s predecessor, President Joe Biden, turned 80 in November 2022. Biden celebrated with a private family brunch at the White House. Trump sought to tie the fights to larger celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.    Trump has long been a master of political misdirection, purposely presenting people with something other than his presidency to focus on when things aren’t going well. With the war in Iran having kept gas prices high and renewing concerns about inflation while Trump’s job approval ratings fall, a White House birthday party unlike anything America has ever seen can certainly qualify as a diversion.

Why this matters: After announcing an agreement that he says will bring an end to the U.S. war with Iran, Trump arrives with some wind at his back for talks with G7 leaders. This includes some who have been sharply critical of his managing of the Iran war that has led to a surge in global energy prices. The summit is expected to have a large focus on Iran, with discussions on demining the Strait of Hormuz, according to the White House. The Russia-Ukraine war will also be a key topic, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy invited for a session with G7 leaders.

But on Italy’s Adda River a da Vinci-era ferry, guided by a cable and pulled by currents, offers harried commuters five minutes of serenity. One rider said, “The romance and added value of the Adda and the ferry are truly amazing. It makes for a better start to the day.” It’s definitely not a gridlocked highway or packed train.
