In the news today: Poland and NATO allies shot down a wave of Russian drones violating Polish airspace; an Israeli attack on Hamas leaders in Qatar shocks Gulf allies; and a judge has blocked Trump's effort to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. Also, Emmanuel Macron appoints France’s fourth prime minister in barely a year. (Chancellery of the Prime Minister of Poland via AP) WORLD NEWS Poland says it shot down Russian drones that violated its airspace during bombardment of Ukraine Poland said early Wednesday that it and its NATO allies had shot down Russian drones that violated Polish airspace in what it called an “act of aggression” as Russia launched aerial attacks on Ukraine. Warsaw’s Chopin Airport suspended flights for several hours, citing the closure of airspace due to military operations. Read more.

What to know: Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on social media that “Last night the Polish airspace was violated by a large number of Russian drones. Those drones that posed a direct threat were shot down.” Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz thanked NATO Air Command and The Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force for supporting the action of neutralizing “more than 10 objects” that crossed into Polish airspace with F-35 fighter jets.  Several European leaders said they believed Russia was intentionally escalating the war, and NATO was discussing the incident in a meeting. Leaders in the strategically located Baltic states of Lithuanian, Latvia and Estonia — the NATO members that are most nervous about Russian aggression — expressed deep concerns. Polish airspace has been violated multiple times since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, but there has been nothing on this scale either in Poland or in any other Western nation along the eastern flank of NATO and the European Union.

It has evacuated tens of thousands of American citizens from Afghanistan. It has been designated a U.S. “major non-NATO ally.” None of that protected the state from coming under an Israeli aerial attack on Tuesday as it mediated U.S.-backed negotiations to end the Israel-Hamas war. Read more.

Why this matters: Since Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel ignited its war in Gaza, the Israeli military has targeted Hamas leaders far afield. But while Tehran and Beirut were seen as fair game, Israel had refrained from striking Hamas’ political office in Qatar, the key mediator and U.S. ally that Israeli leadership relied on as a back channel to the Palestinian militant group. On Tuesday, Israel made a dangerous gamble, analysts say, poisoning Israel-Hamas ceasefire talks, sending political shock waves through the region and raising doubts about historical U.S. security guarantees for its Gulf Arab allies. It didn’t immediately pay off for Israel: Hamas claims its senior leadership survived the strike. The apparent U.S. disregard for Qatari security and sovereignty rattled nerves across the sheikhdoms of the Persian Gulf. While Emiratis and Saudis view political Islam as a threat and loathe Hamas, experts say they’d prefer a detente with their weakened rivals to the continuation of an ever-widening war that could trigger strikes on their soil.

The ruling, which will almost certainly be appealed, is a blow to the Trump administration’s efforts to assert more control over the traditionally independent Fed. Read more.

Why this matters: The decision means Cook will be able to participate in the Fed’s Sept. 16-17 meeting, when it is expected to reduce its key short-term rate by a quarter-point to between 4% and 4.25%. The White House did not immediately comment. If Trump can replace Cook, he may be able to gain a 4-3 majority on the Fed’s governing board. Trump has repeatedly attacked Fed chair Jerome Powell and the other members of the Fed’s interest-rate setting committee for not cutting the short-term interest rate they control more quickly. Trump has said he will only appoint people to the Fed who will support lower rates. Many economists worry that if the Fed falls under the control of the White House, it will keep its key interest rate lower than justified by economic fundamentals to satisfy Trump’s demands for cheaper borrowing. That could accelerate inflation and could also push up longer-term interest rates, such as those on mortgages and car loans.
