(AP Photo/Jehad Alshrafi) GAZA Israeli airstrike targets and kills Al Jazeera correspondent as toll worsens on Gaza journalists Israel’s military targeted an Al Jazeera correspondent with an airstrike Sunday, killing him, another network journalist and at least six other people, all of whom were sheltering outside a Gaza City hospital complex. Both Israel and hospital officials in Gaza City confirmed the deaths, which press advocates described as retribution against those documenting the war in Gaza. Read more.

Recent developments: Officials at Shifa Hospital said those killed included Al Jazeera correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohamed Qreiqeh. The strike also killed four other journalists and two other people, hospital administrative director Rami Mohanna told the AP. The strike also damaged the entrance to the hospital complex’s emergency building. Israel’s military described al-Sharif as the leader of a Hamas cell — an allegation that Al Jazeera and al-Sharif had previously dismissed as baseless. Al Jazeera called the strike “targeted assassination” and accused Israeli officials of incitement, connecting al-Sharif’s death to the allegations that both the network and correspondent had denied. The incident marked the first time during the war that Israel’s military has swiftly claimed responsibility after a journalist was killed in a strike.

Key points: The American Federation of Government Employees, Local 2883, demanded federal officials condemn vaccine misinformation, saying it was putting scientists at risk. It said the CDC and leadership of the Department of Health and Human Services must provide a “clear and unequivocal stance in condemning vaccine disinformation.” Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reached out to staff on Saturday, saying “no one should face violence while working to protect the health of others.”

Why this matters: Bihar is a crucial election battleground state where Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party has only ever governed in a coalition. Poll results there could likely impact the balance of power in India’s Parliament, where Modi’s government relies on coalition partners, including a regional party from Bihar. India’s opposition accuses the Election Commission of India of rushing through a mammoth electoral roll revision, saying the exercise could render vast numbers of citizens unable to vote. The revision of nearly 80 million voters involves strict documentation requirements from citizens, triggering concerns it could lead to the exclusion of vulnerable groups. Critics and opposition leaders say the exercise will impact minorities the most, including Muslims, and disallow them from voting. The election agency has denied the allegations and said it has ensured no eligible voter is “left behind." Modi's BJP has backed the revision.
