Good morning, I’m Siddharth, filling in for Sarah Naffa.     In the news today: Powerful waves travel across the Pacific after 8.8-magnitude earthquake; a new Gallup poll shows support for Israel’s actions in Gaza declining; and the Senate confirms a former Trump lawyer for a lifetime appointment as a federal appeals court judge. Also, what the beauty industry’s love for Argan oil means for Morocco. (Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences via AP) WORLD 8.8-magnitude earthquake sends tsunami into coasts of Russia, Japan and Hawaii The earthquake appeared to be the strongest anywhere in the world since the 9.0 magnitude earthquake off northeastern Japan in March 2011. No substantial damage has been reported so far, but authorities warned people away from shorelines and said the risk could last more than a day. Read more.

What to know: Ports on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia near the quake’s epicenter flooded as residents fled inland and frothy, white waves washed up to the shore in northern Japan. Russian authorities said several people were injured, without giving a figure. In Japan, at least one person was injured.  Tsunami heights of 10 to 13 feet were recorded in Kamchatka, 2 feet on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido and up to 1.4 feet above tide levels in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands.

Why this matters: Democrats have vehemently opposed Bove’s nomination, citing his current position as a top Justice Department official and his role in the dismissal of the corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. They also criticized his efforts to investigate department officials who were involved in the prosecutions of hundreds of Trump supporters accused of crimes in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

Key points: The new polling also found about half of U.S. adults now have an unfavorable view of Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, his most negative rating since he was first included in Gallup polling in 1997. The findings underscore the Israeli government’s dramatic loss of support within the U.S. The rising disapproval is driven by Democrats and independents, who are much less likely to approve of Israel’s actions than they were in November 2023. Republicans, on the other hand, remain largely supportive of Israel’s military actions and Netanyahu. Young adults also are much more likely to disapprove of Israel’s actions. Only about 1 in 10 adults under age 35 say they approve of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, compared with about half of those who are 55 or older.
