Good morning and welcome to the Sunday edition of Morning Wire, where we give you the weekend rundown to get ready for the week ahead. (AP Photo/Julia Demaree Nikhinson) The 2026 Senate map is tough for Democrats, but Republicans have their own headaches Republicans are encountering early headaches in Senate races viewed as pivotal to maintaining the party’s majority in next year’s midterm elections, with recruitment failures, open primaries, infighting and a president who has been sitting on the sidelines. Democrats still face an uphill battle. They need to net four seats to retake the majority, and most of the 2026 contests are in states that Republican President Donald Trump easily won last November. Read more.

The Israeli military said that soldiers had shot at a gathering of thousands of Palestinians in northern Gaza who posed a threat, and that it was aware of some casualties. But it said that the numbers being reported by teams in Gaza were far higher than the military’s initial investigation found. Read more.  How to prepare for a hurricane, as forecasters expect a busy 2025 storm season Hurricane season can be stressful for millions of people living in coastal areas, as powerful winds and heavy rain can cause widespread damage, cut power for days or weeks and otherwise upend people’s lives. Forecasters are expecting another unusually busy season for the Atlantic, with predictions calling for six to 10 hurricanes. But the stress of hurricane season can be reduced if people have a plan for preparing their homes and for whether to stay and ride out a storm or evacuate. Read more.
