In the news today: Israel attacks Iran’s nuclear and missile sites, raising the potential for an all-out war between the two bitter adversaries; the Trump administration has told hundreds of thousands immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela they have to leave immediately; and the U.S. defense secretary told Congress the Pentagon has developed plans to take over Greenland and Panama by force if necessary. (AP Photo/Vahid Salemi) WORLD NEWS Israel attacks Iran’s nuclear and missile sites and kills top military officials Israel attacked Iran’s capital early Friday in strikes that targeted the country’s nuclear program and killed at least two top military officers, raising the potential for an all-out war between the two bitter Middle East adversaries. Simmering tensions over Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program boiled over and Iran quickly retaliated, sending a swarm of drones at Israel. Read more.

Why this matters: It appeared to be the most significant attack Iran has faced since its 1980s war with Iraq. Multiple sites around the country were hit, including Iran’s main nuclear enrichment facility. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that an Israeli strike hit Iran’s uranium enrichment facility at Natanz and said it was closely monitoring radiation levels. The leader of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Hossein Salami, was confirmed dead, Iranian state television reported. The chief of staff of Iranian armed forces, Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, was also confirmed dead by Iranian state television. Other top military officials and scientists were believed to have been killed. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that “severe punishment” would be directed at Israel. Israel said Iran had launched drones in an initial response. Countries in the region condemned Israel’s attack, while leaders around the globe called for immediate deescalation from both sides. U.S. President Donald Trump again urged Iran to reach a deal with Washington on its nuclear program, warning on his Truth Social platform that Israel’s attacks “will only get worse.” Without saying whether he was privy to specific Israeli plans, Trump said “there is still time to make this slaughter, with the next already planned attacks being even more brutal, come to an end.”

Why this matters: The termination notices are being sent by email to people who entered the country under the humanitarian parole program for the four countries, officials said. DHS said that the letters informed people that both their temporary legal status and their work permit was revoked “effective immediately.” Donald Trump’s decision to end the parole program for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans was challenged at the courts, but the Supreme Court last month permitted the Trump administration to revoke those temporary legal protections.

What to know: The Air India plane crashed minutes after takeoff Thursday afternoon in the northwestern city of Ahmedabad. Indian authorities said Friday the investigation into the crash was underway, which is expected to include experts from the plane’s maker Boeing and U.S. aviation regulators. The lone survivor was a passenger, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin. Ramesh was thrown from the aircraft and walked to an ambulance, according to Dr. Dhaval Gameti, who treated Ramesh. It’s the first crash of a Boeing 787, according to the Aviation Safety Network database. There was no information yet about possible causes of the crash.
