The S&P 500 was down 4.6%, the Nasdaq Composite lost 10%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was off 1.3% for the quarter. Columnist James Mackintosh explores how to prepare your portfolio for the next market mess. 2. The White House hasn’t determined the specifics of its new tariffs agenda ahead of Wednesday—what President Trump calls Liberation Day. He said yesterday that he’d target “essentially all” U.S. trading partners. His advisers considered global duties of up to 20%, a plan the president promoted on the campaign trail. Reciprocal and industry-specific tariffs are also options. A 25% tariff on global automotive imports is set to go into effect on Thursday. Meanwhile, Canada has turned “Elbows Up”—a reference to hockey legend Gordie Howe’s brutal style of play—into a movement opposed to Trump’s tariff and takeover threats. 3. A former Deutsche Bank executive sued the lender alleging it hid from regulators operational mishaps that led to a $30 million loss in its U.S. arm. Noah Ramos’s lawsuit said Deutsche Bank fired him last year in retaliation for urging senior executives to report breaches related to loans to wealthy clients. The bank claimed he violated a policy by showing an anti-Asian bias, an allegation he denies. Ramos is suing for damages of $100 million or more. Regulators have called out Deutsche Bank over its lax controls before, with hundreds of millions of dollars in fines and penalties. 4. The Trump family continues its crypto blitz—this time by investing in bitcoin mining. Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr.’s American Data Centers will merge with and take a 20% stake in a mining operation to work on creating the world’s largest digital-currency miner, with designs on building its own bitcoin reserve. The Trumps have previously launched meme coins and announced plans to invest in digital assets and issue a stablecoin. The president has said he wants to make the U.S. the world’s crypto capital. They won temporary restraining orders or preliminary injunctions in eight, with two requests still pending, according to the Democratic Attorneys General Association. NATO began policing the inland waterway—which bloc members share with Russia—after ships’ anchors damaged undersea cables and pipelines. No proof has been found that Moscow ordered or orchestrated the destruction, according to officials familiar with the investigations, though suspicion runs high in NATO countries.
