Major U.S. stock exchanges closed down (🔐 read for free), with the Nasdaq Composite suffering its worst day since 2022. Global banks issued more somber outlooks. President Trump over the weekend refused to rule out the country entering a recession this year. Many investors had anticipated that American exceptionalism—the U.S.’s perceived advantages over other countries, such as its economic strength and technological innovations—would help drive another robust year. Meanwhile, on the 25th anniversary of the dot-com boom’s peak, columnist Rolfe Winkler looks at what the subsequent bust can tell us about today’s AI bonanza. 2. Washington and Beijing are working on a potential “birthday summit” in June in the U.S. between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The discussions are in the early stages, according to people familiar with the matter. Both leaders were born in June. With economic pressure building, China wants to fend off—or at least slow down—the U.S.’s additional tariff hikes and other trade measures. The White House and the Chinese Embassy declined to comment. At the same time, Beijing is waging an expansion campaign to extend its power across Asia. 3. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s high-wire act requires him to satisfy his constituents—and Trump. The latest test comes tomorrow, when senior U.S. and Ukrainian officials meet in Saudi Arabia to discuss ways to end the war with Russia. Zelensky isn’t expected to attend. The talks are the highest-level meeting between the sides since Trump and Zelensky’s Oval Office argument, which led the former to halt arms deliveries and intelligence sharing with Kyiv. Here’s how Europe is trying to back Ukraine and shore up its defenses without Washington. 4. Canada’s new leader embodies Trump’s least favorite things. Mark Carney belongs to the global technocratic elite, has led two central banks and works to tackle climate change. As the new head of the governing Liberal Party, he’s in line to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Political analysts expect him to call new elections that will test whether Trump’s drive to rip down and rebuild the world’s economic order will gain traction north of the border. 5. U.S. immigration officials will pursue more campus organizers like the detained Columbia University student who helped lead pro-Palestinian demonstrations. In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that Mahmoud Khalil’s arrest on Saturday was the first of many and that the administration will not tolerate student organizers “who have engaged in pro-terrorist, anti-Semitic, anti-American activity.” Khalil’s lawyer said a Department of Homeland Security agent told her the State Department had revoked his green card. Khalil is a lawful permanent resident, according to his attorney.
