In the news today: The EPA targets dozens of environmental regulations; the Trump administration has resumed detention of immigrant families; and Russia says it has retaken Kursk’s biggest town from Ukraine. Also, authorities said a woman trapped in her car after a crash survived for nearly a week by sucking water from a sweatshirt that she dipped into a small creek. Puskar) CLIMATE A breakdown of the 31 EPA deregulatory moves around water, air, climate Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin on Wednesday announced nearly three dozen deregulatory moves that he said would spur the U.S. economy by rolling back rules that have unfairly burdened industry. Many of the moves would affect landmark regulations aimed at protecting clean air and water. Read more.

What to know: The EPA will reconsider policy on topics including power plant emissions standards; toxic emission limits on power plants; wastewater rules for coal and other power plants; uses for oil and gas wastewater; petrochemical emergency planning; and greenhouse gas reporting requirements.

IMMIGRATION Trump administration resumes detention of immigrant families after Biden-era pause The Trump administration resumed the detention of immigrant families last week in a South Texas facility after a Biden-era pause, a legal nonprofit group providing services to migrant families said Wednesday. Read more.

Why this matters: Fourteen immigrant families with children as young as one year old were in the detention facility in Karnes County, Texas, according to RAICES, which provides services to families at the center. The families are originally from Colombia, Romania, Iran, Angola, Russia, Armenia, Turkey and Brazil. Both the Obama administration and Trump’s first administration detained families until their immigration cases played out. Trump severely curbed asylum and forcibly separated children from their parents at the border in a policy widely denounced as inhumane. The practice of family detention was largely halted, but not abolished, during the Biden administration.

What to know: The Russian Defense Ministry’s claim that it recaptured the town of Sudzha, hours after President Vladimir Putin visited his commanders in Kursk and wore military fatigues, could not be independently verified. Ukrainian officials made no immediate comment on the claim. The U.S. on Tuesday lifted its March 3 suspension of military aid for Kyiv after senior U.S. and Ukrainian officials made progress on how to stop the fighting during talks held in Saudi Arabia.
