PHOTO: ADRIAN WYLD/ASSOCIATED PRESS 1. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will resign after almost a decade in power, after voters and his Liberal Party soured on his vision for the country. He said that he’d stay on until the party chooses a new leader (🔐 read for free), which could take months. His exit will leave his party in a weakened position, as his country faces 25% tariffs that Donald Trump promised. Trudeau is the latest progressive politician to suffer from a voter backlash amid economic retreat, discontent with aggressive climate policies and a growing resistance to immigration. 2. Congress smoothly certified Donald Trump’s election victory. Four years ago, a pro-Trump riot temporarily halted the proceedings confirming President Biden’s win. Today, Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, presided over the certification of the election she’d lost. Unlike in 2021, no one raised objections, and the proceedings were quick. The president-elect says he’ll pardon many Jan. 6 rioters; video journalist Jordan Kranse explains what could happen. And in New York, Trump is trying to stop his hush-money sentencing set for later this week. 3. U.S. Steel and Japan’s Nippon Steel are challenging President Biden’s move to kill their $14.1 billion deal. They filed a pair of lawsuits accusing him, the steelworkers union president and a rival CEO of conspiring to scuttle the sale of the American company. Biden rejected the deal due to national-security concerns, according to the White House. Union president Dave McCall said that the organization would “vigorously defend against these baseless allegations.” U.S. Steel shares closed up 8.1%, and Nippon Steel shares slipped 0.7% in Japanese trading. 4. Years after ending their own driverless plans, Uber and Lyft are embracing autonomous-vehicle operators and offering new app features. Both ride-sharing companies this year will have driverless cars—from Waymo and others—and customers will be able to open trunks and honk horns via the apps. The ride-sharing companies are building infrastructure to maintain the robotaxis and training human support staff to handle riders without drivers. 5. Unemployed office workers are having a harder time finding new jobs. As of November, more than 1.6 million out-of-work Americans have been job hunting for at least six months, according to the Labor Department. That’s up more than 50% since the end of 2022. The pain is largely in high-paying white-collar jobs, including in tech, law and media. Two flight attendants lived through a Jeju Air crash in South Korea on Dec. 29 that killed the remaining 179 people on board.
