REUTERS/Gleb Garanich Russia blasted the main children's hospital in Kyiv with a missile in broad daylight and rained missiles down on other cities across Ukraine, killing at least 41 civilians in the deadliest wave of air strikes for months.  India's relationship with Russia is based on "mutual trust and mutual respect," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Moscow, where he also said he appreciated President Vladimir Putin's leadership. Cuba has foiled a plot to sneak arms and ammunition onto the Caribbean island from the US, detaining nearly three dozen people in a broader scheme authorities say sought to destabilize its government.

NATO summit

US President Joe Biden will welcome leaders from Europe at the NATO summit in Washington DC as fears of a second Donald Trump presidency hang over the alliance and Biden struggles at home to quiet critics in his own party.  The NATO meeting’s highlights will include bolstered Ukraine aid, bilateral meetings with Britain’s new leader Keir Starmer and Japan’s new pledge to cement NATO ties. Trevor Hunnicutt joins the Reuters World News podcast to discuss this critical moment for Biden.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will hold a campaign rally at his golf club near Miami, with just days left before he must select a running mate to take the stage with him at the party's national convention next week. France's left has a Jean-Luc Mélenchon problem. His party's top position gives him a credible claim to be France's next prime minister. Purdue Pharma's creditors sought permission from a US bankruptcy court to sue the company's wealthy owners, arguing that the litigation can serve as both a negotiating tool and a fallback option as the OxyContin maker re-starts talks on a bankruptcy settlement.
