Yesterday, we asked whether gun violence should be labeled a public-health crisis. Here’s what you had to say: Absolutely not. I have been a gun owner all my life, and none of the assortment of rifles, shotguns or pistols has hurt anyone. If guns are to be considered a health crisis, what about knives, baseball bats, tire irons and other things that can be used as weapons? People are the problem, not the instrument. —Bill Alley, Kentucky I would have to say, “Duh!” Isn’t it the No. 1 cause of death in children? It isn’t rocket science, but it sure is a moral and mortality issue. —Cindy Krieg, Idaho Gun violence should not be labeled as a public-health crisis. The mental health of the individuals committing any type of violence is a public-health crisis. We need more options for the evaluation, treatment or in-patient care for individuals with mental illnesses. —Shelley Halleman, South Dakota Responses have been condensed and edited. |
