This week, Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing, where the two leaders showcased both the closeness of their personal relationship and the growing economic and political ties between their two countries. Xi and Putin also pledged to deepen their military cooperation—and condemned the United States for pursuing what they described as “confrontational policies.”
China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea are cooperating to weaken the United States and dismantle the current U.S.-led world order, warn Andrea Kendall-Taylor and Richard Fontaine. If Washington wants to counter this increasingly coordinated group, it cannot treat each threat as an isolated phenomenon. “This is a group bent on upheaval,” they write, “and the United States and its partners must treat the axis as the generational challenge it is.”
